Corr.: What are you singing for? Alyona Astasheva: I think that many agree with the thought that singing and music do not belong to the material sphere. They belong to the sphere of spiritual, and it is very important that this vocal talent that God gave to man would glorify God in his Spirit. We work among lay musicians, and we see them deeply depressed, hard drinking, seing no way out of the crisis of the arts in our country. Our spiritual well-being for many artists is a testimony that they should turn to God and use their talents to glorify him. Corr.: How did you start realizing that changes were necessary? A.A.: Members of our group felt the necessity to fellowship with God in different ways. We already had several singers who had received Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. I was baptized at the New Life Church. Some artists left our group because they disagreed with our views; it always was very painful to us. But the Lord brought us new faithful people, people who share our views. Corr.: How are music works of your collective are being born? A.A.: For centuries, the Holy Spirit inspires composers from all over the world to write music which would praise and glorify the Lord. This music leaves a very deep trace in the souls of people who heard it. We are trying to pay much attention to our work and authentically reconstruct in sound the innermost fellowship between the Creator and the composer. Corr.: Could you tell us about yourself? A.A.: I grew up among professional musicians, and I know very well all the "attributes of elite life." I knew what drinking, smoking, and other vices was. I had quite a successful career. I graduated from Kiev Music School and Kiev Pedagogical University with distinction. When I was a last-year student, I already taught music. I was invited to participate in tours abroad as a singer with various choirs. Once in Yugoslavia I heard a professional vocal octet and felt a strong desire to found such a collective in Ukraine. This form is very popular abroad, but little-known in our country. When the collective was created, I asked myself a question: why do we need this work? At this moment the Lord turned everything in my life around. Our collective was invited to sing at the New Life Church. All of a sudden, our existence acquired meaning and justification. By his grace, God in his church gave us everything that we couldn't find in the world - spiritual values, material well-being, joy, and love. I praise the Lord and thank him for receiving me into the family of Christians. Corr.: What are your plans for the future? A.A.: Now we are working on the presentation for our solo concert. We receive invitations to participate in festivals and contests in different countries. We will be very glad if this material would help "Lege Àrtis" find new friends and people of the same views interested to create new projects or to conduct concerts with our participation.
