Cor.: When and how did you decide to write and play Christian music?

Vitaly Yegorov: At first, I learnt how to play guitar… It happened when I was 15, after I repented. Before that, even being so much found of modern music, I could hardly distinguish between a rhythm guitar and a bass guitar. To be honest, I have never thought of becoming a musician. Having accepted Jesus as the Lord and having said good-bye to my record library, I was ready to become just anyone in the Kingdom of God. However, Lord had made some other plans for me. Having learnt several guitar accords I wrote a couple of songs. Soon, I was invited to the praise and worship group where I serve until this day. It was quite unexpected even for me. However, month after month I became more and more fond of music, the art of playing music and arrangement. To some extend, I learnt how to play some other instruments, tried to write Christian songs. To be honest, it happened often enough that I had to write new songs because we needed some fresh repertoire for the church or for some concerts. However, we have seen God blessing many people through our songs. The songs are born out of the abundance of the heart, but it’s a different topic of discussion. When we had enough songs written and the musicians who played the songs wanted to stay in the band, there appeared an idea of creating a rock-band in the church (The Spring of Life), which would work on evangelic concerts for young people. In such a way, the band “Tornado” was born.

Cor.:
Why did you choose the name “Tornado”?

Olga Logunova: Our church has been trough different experiences and there was a time when the rain of the Holy Spirit came and flooded the ground of our thirsty hearts. Then the wind came… Not like the Penticostal one, but many people were able to experience God’s touch, glory, love and joy. That’s why the name “Tornado” is ideal for our band.

Vitaly Yegorov: «Tornado» - is holy God’s breath that sweeps all the bad, worldly things out of a person, breaks all the obstacles and stable religious traditions, like a natural tornado. One day such a wind touched us and we will never be the same.

Cor.: How do you write your songs?

Vitaly Yegorov: At this time I am the author of the songs, although sometimes we sing the songs by other authors. The main thing is that they match our style and our spirit. By the way, in the beginning of our creative way we sang more of other people’s songs than our own songs. Now, we have enough of our own songs to play a solo concert.
How do we write the songs? I think, like anyone else – in different ways. Anything can inspire me to write a song: some event, experience, some other song or even a movie … I can feel the news I want to share, so I take my guitar or keyboard and start “searching for the music”. Sometimes it happens in the opposite way - there is some good tune and I look for the good lyrics. I don’t want to tell that I can write something good all by myself. I have realized a long time ago – good songs come due to God’s mercy and due to His help. There are times when I can’t write a thing and then I come to Him and work and come to Him again.
There were times when songs would come out of “sketches” prepared for some special occasion or for a play, etc. Christians argue too much about it. Many people think that writing a song is something holy. They think that the songs should be written only in the state of prayer ecstasy or in the blessing. Otherwise, they think, the songs are not from God. Yes, it happens but we need to remember that the song is not holy; music is not holy. God is Holy. A man who knows and loves God will never write an anathema or foolishness. Finally, we have His Spirit dwelling in us. A plain song written in the company of your friends on the beach can serve for salvation of thousands of people. The important thing is how anointed the singer is.

Cor.: What does music mean for you?

Sergey Potapchenko: It is commonly known that music is the rhythm + harmony+ tune and so on…But those are not the most important things. The most important thing in music is that as an instrument of worship and praise to God Himself music should be very powerful in itself.
The matter is that when you play music inspired by the Holy Spirit, your feelings are just ineffable. You have to feel it. I think, many musicians would agree with me here.

Vitaly Bespalov: I am sure that music can open a person’s heart and can help him to know the God we know. When the music has some sense in itself, when it’s not superficial, it can touch a person's heart and reveal something to him. When you look at the bands that are popular today, our only desire is to stand up against this rave and to tell people the truth.

Olga Logunova: Many of those, who have listened to our songs at least once, find things that are harmonious to their souls. I know people who were filled with the Holy Spirit when they listened to the songs about God’s love in our albums.

Cor.: What category of people do you sing for?

Vitaly Bespalov: Our music is mainly designed for the young people (both believers and unbelievers). During the concerts, I saw people’s interest in what we do. They were quite surprised but they were also open to what we preached and sang.

Cor.:
Where do your concerts take place?

Vitaly Yegorov: We don’t really care where to play. Our repertoire is designed for adolescents in orphanages, for village clubs and even for church holidays. However, most of all we like to play concerts in front of worldly audience and change their attitude to the Christian music and to Christ Himself. From time to time, we play concerts in our native town where people recognize us. During summer time, we visit neighboring towns and villages; sometimes we go to some other cities of Crimea.

Cor.: Tell us please, about yourself, about your friends and hobbies.
