Corr.: When and how did you decide to write and perform Christian music? Igor: To write and perform Christian music, I started a year after my repentance when God opened in my heart the desire to devote all of my creativity, only to Him. It wasn’t just an emotional decision made after my repentance, but it was a decision made on the basis of those real and great miracles of God, that I had seen in my life and that had changed my life completely. Max: I knew from childhood that God exists. My mother, a believer, told me about Him. I was weened on rock-music. I listened to music a lot, I played music of different styles, but I was put of by gloomy texts, because of that my heart was heavy. I understood that it was evil. And I had a desire to write about the triumph of good over evil. That was the beginning of everything. Corr.: Why is your band called «Jacob’s ladder»? Igor: We couldn’t decide for a long time what to call our band. We had many tries, but none were effective. But we didn’t want to create any ultra-modern names or customize the name to the standard religious concepts. And once, like a thunderbolt from a clear sky a long-expected name appeared. In one wonderful morning Max and I discussed an arrangement for the song «Jacob’s ladder». God gave me this song some years before all the above-described events happened. So the name of the band seemed to go down from the heavens, from God - «Jacob’s ladder». Max: There is an invisible connection between the spiritual and material world, between the sky and the earth. The ladder - is a foretype of Joshua (Jesus), Who is the Heavenly Eternal Way of Salvation, The Way that goes from the Father-God to people, and from people to The Everlasting Father. The presence of God on the top of this ladder - this is a great moment of the majestic event that happened between the Heavens and the Earth, between the man and God himself. Corr.: How do you write your songs? Igor: I didn’t write songs in a usual manner. I write down the things coming from God, and after some arrangement it becomes the song you hear. Max: I try to hide in a remote from noise and people place to be alone with God. The process of creating - is a prayer and searching for new ways of expressing your love to God. Corr.: What are your songs about? Igor: These songs are not just cooked-up stories, they’re stories from my life and from my friends’ lives. If to say briefly - they’re songs in which I speak about everything happened to me, about all the feelings and emotions I had to experience in specific moments of my past godless life. And about the feelings in my new life with God. Without any doubt the main deciding factor that influenced not only my life but my creativity as well - is my faith. There would be nothing without Him - neither band, nor songs, nor lyrics. I’m very grateful to God for He’s done so much in my life. He’s alive indeed, it’s necessary only to believe in Him. Max: Starting from the age of 13, as God was opening Himself to me, I wanted to sing and to write lyrics about Him. At first I was attracted by that unconsciously but as I found out about the real existence of God and experienced His actions in my own life, I started to perceive that everything I sing about is not just words, it’s the truth that changes the lives of people miraculously. I understood that God is a real Creature that is able to change all my life. Corr.: What does music mean for you? Igor: Music for me is the means of expressing my love to God, the means of reaching people’s hearts so as they could feel God’s love and find the way to salvation. Generally music for me is the means of serving God. Max: Music is an expression of my longing for God, like a prayer, like communication with Him. Music is the way of expressing my love and gratitude. Andrew: Music for me is the meaning of life, my favorite hobby I’m going to be devoted all my life. Dima: Music for me is the way of expressing my thoughts. Corr.: What audience do you sing for? Answer: We sing our songs for thinking and searching people who wish to find out about the meaning of their lives and about the existence of God. We want to direct our creativity on ministry to people who are searching for Him. Corr.: Where do you perform? Answer: We had some small concerts. For today we don’t have a permanent place for performances. Corr.: Tell me, please, about you in details. Igor: Shulik Igor Vasilyevich, born in 1968. I graduated from the Republican school of Headwaiters, married, have a daughter of 11 years old. During 5 years I played in praise and worship band In Kiev Jewish Messianic community. From my childhood I write lyrics, songs, stories. I have not-finished musical education of “classical guitar”. I came to God in 1993, I sang in a choir, sang in a Russian Orthodox church choir. At present I’m the leader of the band «Jacob’s ladder». My main hobby is quite banal - poetry and music. I like the nature very much, especially to walk along the river-bank or in the forest and to think about life. Max: Starovoyt Max Konstantinovich, born in 1980, have finished Boguslav Pedagogical College, I’m a designer, single (yet). I started my creative way when I was 12 in a school ensemble. I participated in children creativity festivals. I played at the festival «Chervona Ruta». I was a leading guitarist in the bands «Trace» and «Shofar». I recorded some albums. I’m keen on painting, computer design in three-D graphics, I have painted pictures, paint in oils. I plan to work at film directing, to shoot films, clips. Volodya: Borisov Vladimir Alexandrovich, born in 1977, single. Education - music school named after Stetsenko learned how to play drums. I started playing in 1992 in school dramatics, then I studied at Stetsenko music school, and after that I had ssome hard years of work on my mastery of drums. And, at last in 2000 I became the main drummer in the band «Jacob’s ladder». I like aero modeling, fishing, English. My friends are from the band «Jacob’s ladder». Dima: Oleynik Dmitriy Valeryevich, born in 1978, single. Since 1999 I started studying bass-guitar in the music school named after Stetsenko. At the same period of time I played in the band «LAP». Then I played in the heavy-metal band «Àrhat», participated in the recording of their 3 albums. In august 2001 the band performed at the festival «We’re for rock» in Kiev. I played in that band till June 2002. Then I came to the band «Jacob’s ladder» as a bass-guitarist. The main hobby of my life is playing the guitar. I’m keen on apartment design and furniture design. I dream about becoming a professional musician. My friends are musicians, programmers, and organizers of model design show. Andrew: Stepanets Andrew Vladimirovich, born in 1978. I have higher education, I’m an engineer of the medical acoustic devices. Lieutenant of the VMV. Single. On the 4th course at the institute I entered the musical school named after Stetsenko to study “percussion instruments”. In a year time I played in the band «LAP». After that I practiced my mastery of drums, participated in school ensembles. Then I spent one year in the heavy-metal band «Àrhat», and in April 2002 I entered the band «Jacob’s ladder» as a drummer-percussionist. My favorite hobbies are music, programming. I’d like to be a musician of world reputation. I have a desire to open a professional music school for young talents. I’d like to promote the production of the band «Jacob’s ladder» all around the world.
